Off to New Mexico

Hello Everyone, I have to say that I'm extremely excited and glad to be representing Parallel Clothing here in Arizona this year! My schedule has been quite hectic as of late and I'm working hard to prepare for the US Public Links qualifying tournament in Albuquerque, New Mexico next weekend. I'm hoping to improve on my finish in the event after nearly missing to grab a spot last year. I shot 70 and was in a seven man playoff for the remaining spots. After parring the first, I bogeyed the second after failing to get up and down. I ended up finishing as an alternate for the championship which was highly disappointing. However, I took a lot of positives from the event that has helped carry me throughout the gradual stages of improvement this past year. This year in New Mexico there are only 40 entries so we will all be fighting for one qualifying spot. I've been working hard on my game and am slowly beginning to see improvements on the overall shape of my swing which should improve the consistency of my ball striking. I have to thank my swing coach Andrew Getson at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale for all the hard work and wisdom he has instilled in me. I'll be keeping you all updated about how the tournament goes and look forward to catching you all up on everything soon. God bless.

US Amateur Qualifier

It's been a busy past couple weeks! Tomorrow I will be qualifying at the Wigwam Golf Resort for the US Amateur. I've come close to qualifying in the past and would absolutely love to qualify to compete in my country's national championship. I was able to play a practice round today and will need to play the par 3's well and take advantage of every scoring opportunity on the par 5's on the golf course. Need to drop some putts to get through. Last week I competed in the Arizona State Amateur qualifier and qualified with a 73. Not my best performance, but I'll be ready to compete in the AZ State Amateur at the beginning of August in Tucson Arizona. The game felt great during the qualifier, but I struggled once again with the putter. I've been focusing on my visualization when putting and trying to allow the athlete in me take over when I putt. I've seen some improvement in my last few practice rounds and am hoping that it will translate tomorrow into a great first round score to put me in a good position to qualify. I'll keep you all updated about how the qualifier goes. I'd love to represent Parallel on a national level after hopefully qualifying!

The Fundamentals

Over the past month or so I've been striking the ball quite well off the tee and from about 150 yards and out with my irons. However, when I got to 100 yards and in I was horrible! I was air mailing greens, hitting thin, fat, coming up short, pretty much anywhere but on the green. Not very good considering those are your scoring clubs. I lost all confidence in those clubs. So bad that I would even consider taking a 6 iron and hitting a bump from 100 yards if there wasn't any trouble in front of the green. That might actually be a good play on some links style courses but not around me where it's mainly parkland-type courses. This past week I went to my swing coach to get a quick tune up. It turns out that I was getting too upright in my posture. It has always been a tendency of mine but he said it was the most upright that he had ever seen me. As soon as I got more bent over from the waist it felt awful and very uncomfortable but I started making solid contact again and the distance with the wedges became consistent again. This just goes to show how important the fundamentals of grip, alignment and posture are. You hear it all the time but it\'s not until you experience something like this that you really begin to realize it. I've been working on the range with the new posture to get used to it and will be testing it out on the course this weekend hopefully!

Trilby No trilby

Sprowston Manor held a Trilby Tour qualifier on the 9th July. I played well scoring 34 points off the "pushed back" Whites with pins in their trickiest positions. 41 points won the day from a 5 handicapper, I was in fact tied eighth which I thought was pretty good considering the blustery conditions that my group played through. I wore a parallel inverted collar design that day which I think helped keep me focused as it coped with the changeable temperatures in fine style.

My Volvo Stalls

Just back from a stuttering start in the Volvo matchplay singles, in which I found myself 4 down by the turn. Still I rallied and came back to half things after the 16th, kept them that way on the 17th by sinking a bogey putt from 25 feet. Sadly a bogey was not good enough on the 18th against his par. Still it was a great match and I felt pretty good wearing my Parallel Inverted Collar Golf Polo Shirt - Olive PC-049. After it was all over my opponent commented on my "funky" shirt and I think that he will be buying into the coolest golf clothing brand out there very shorty! Playing the Trilby Tour Qualifier at Sprowston Manor on Saturday, with another Parallel creation on my back I know that I'm going to feel good whatever state my golf game is in. Swing Easy.

Sunday in Southport

3rd July 2011 - Played what I would call a good round today on a very tricky nine hole course, Southport Old Links in their 3 Division Open medal. A lot of players don't like nine hole layouts, but I can honestly say that Southport Old Links breaks the "repetitive mould" here, as they have gone to great lengths to adjust the way you play the 2nd nine with a selection of alternate teeing areas that give a new challenge to your second time around the layout. The greens here were fantastic and gave me my best putting round of the year so far with 32 putts, careful choice of clubs from the tee helped too as this is a course where you need to have your head screwed-on right to play well. Nett 78 on a Par 72 course was the result. I've included this link to the course http://www.southportoldlinksgolfclub.co.uk/pages.php/index.html Anyone who is interested in playing it can get straight to the details, if you are thinking about it and want some company - then email me at sanlorenzogolf@gmail.com Swing Easy!

Worsley Park

Spent the day at Worsley Park, playing full handicap stableford in the Golf Monthly Centenary day. Fantastic weather with glorious sunshine and a slight breeze helped me to a total of 30 points. Sadly I could have made a tie for the win had I not been drawn into the Long Drive showdown on the 18th. Macho behaviour brought on by some great driving that day.... at least I could not blame my funky Parallel shirt, as I had felt so good playing in it all day, it kept me cool in the sun and drew quite a bit of interest as a "new" brand from the group I was playing in. Pete Lavery, Mal Hodson and Stephen Briggs (who all were happy to be mentioned in this blog) admired my Parallel Asymmetric Golf Polo Shirt - Red PC-048 Pete in particular was impressed by the cutting edge style of the product. http://www.parallelclothing.com/product_info.php?cPath=96&products_id=1585 Some photos of this event will be added later when they are published by Golf Monthly.

Breadsall Priory

Wearing my super-trendy Parallel Smart Full length Golf Shirt - White, I had another go at the Golf Monthly Centenary series, this time at Breadsall Priory, a course that features small wickedly contoured greens and tight fairways in a compact area. I played here with fellow Ambassador Alan Gunnigle, who shot 36 points... I did not. I did however, have my first competition drive of over 300 yards. This was on the 363 yard par 4 11th, where I recorded a drive of 308 yards to the centre of the fairway - absolute magic! (I measured this with my Snooper S280 GPS SatNav) Again, I will attach photos when they are published by Golf Monthly later. Next stop - the Lancashire handicap Foursomes Final at Pleasington Golf Club on the 3rd August, paired with Alan Gunnigle. Swing easy!

Braid Course Under Threat

I played the magnificent Royal Norwich golf course yesterday in the company of their professional Simon Youd. Simon liked the funky Parallel range of Golf shirts that I showed him in the brochure. He thought that that they were some of the most stylish, trendy and unique shirts on the market. The Royal Norwich Golf course is a James Braid layout, which for those of us who have played his creations will know are always well designed and testing courses. Braid did not work with the aid of earth movers and used the contours of the land to set out his courses so they have a "Natural" feel that most modern designs lack. I would encourage you to play the course while you can as some of the holes are under threat from a potential dual-carriageway up-grade - that may mean the whole course moving to a new location..... is time running out for this layout? http://www.royalnorwichgolf.co.uk/ The 8th hole is simply magnificent and the drive on the 13th gives you plenty to consider as you assess your tee shot. Swing Easy!

Kings of Skins

Alan Gunnigle and I won a place to play with Rory McIlroy at the Belfry in a competition run jointly by UNICEF and SKINS both of whom work closely with McIlroy - our game was last Tuesday the 13th September 2011 at the Belfry. As winners we got to play against pairs from across the globe for the title King of Skins on the famous Brabazon Course, host to 4 Ryder Cups. The day started at 08:30 am with breakfast in the Ryder room, a meet and greet with Rory and at 10pm a session on the range with Rory demonstrating his skills and taking questions from us. Much comment was made of my funky Parallel Golf shirt and plus fours combo - in fact I was asked 3 times where I had picked the outfit up! We teed up in the last group at 12:30, catching-up and playing our 3 holes with Rory McIlroy on the 11th. We struggled when in the presence of greatness and in-fact I was the only one of our fourball to post a score on the 11th with a 6 for 1 to add to Rory's 4 for 2. Alan and I made it round the Brabazon in 39 points, Rorys 3 holes contributed an additional 5 points giving us a total of 44 making us clear winners on the day by 2 points. We were presented with our prize by Rory at the evening meal and were "crowned" Kings of Skins for the inaugural 2011 event, hopefully we will get a chance to play & defend the title next year! New Year - New Goals

Hi Everyone I'm starting 2012 with a new swing! I'm going to convert to Stack & Tilt in an effort to gain some consistency. More details on my Blog: http://getstacked2012.blogspot.com/ One thing I won't be changing is my shirts - well only if they need a wash that is. I'm sticking with Parallel - the coolest, funkiest golf shirts on the planet. Anyone - planning a trip to Southport in August should drop me a line by email, as there is a Centenary Pro-Am at one of the clubs - one £20 a head - that’s pretty good value, perhaps not quite a good value as the Parallel sale though. Foursomes - a little Seve Magic, supplied by Parallel

Yesterday 03-08-2011, Alan Gunnigle & I won the Lancashire Union of Golf Clubs Handicap Foursomes Trophy in a closely fought game at Pleasington Golf Club near Bolton. Foursomes is a format were you receive half of your combined handicap and play alternate shots on the same ball. After the first 9 holes we had used 12 of our 16 shots and Alan said "that’s it we're just playing for fun now, there's no way we can win this" Playing the 10th hole, a 173 yard Par 3, Alan struck a majestic tee-shot leaving me with a downhill breaking 7 foot putt which I managed to hole for birdie. That seemed to be a turning point; we relaxed, laughed-off the bad shots and played fantastic golf. Alan boomed out drives and hit some great irons, we both scrambled well and it seemed that my new Scotty Cameron Terrylium Santa Fe putter could not miss from under 10 feet. A series of scrambled pars followed, interspaced with bogies leaving us on the 17th tee two under our handicap. My drive was a good one but a little short, sadly Alan dumped his approach into the left greenside bunker. I managed to get out to within four feet of the pin and Alan sank the par putt. Alan and I were both wearing trendy Parallel Inverted Collar Golf Polo Shirt - Midnight PC-049, which we wore in memory of the late great Seve Ballesteros who we think would have approved of our scrambling on the back nine. A safe bogey on the last, after a blocked out tee-shot left us with a long-wait to find out if our score had been good enough. We finished the day Nett 0.5 under par and won the Trophy for our club - De Vere Herons Reach at Blackpool.

We both looked the part in our new Parallel shirts which I am convinced help me stay cool in times of need. I can assure you that feeling that good in your new gear definitely helps with the confidence and in the end a win. More Parallel shirts will find there way into my locker very shortly.

Any Advantage

Like a lot of golfers out there I'll take any advantage that I can get, be it the latest golf ball for that extra inch of spin or some new shoes so I'm walking on air but the one thing I really like is to have the latest trend setting clothes. The new line from Parallel makes me feel good on the course, and feeling good can be worth a couple of shots a round. My golf locker now has some new arrivals in the shape of some new trendy and fashionable shirts from Parallel.

County Honours

I played in the mens County Foursomes held in May this year at Chippenham Golf Club. This comp is one of the Counties major events, previous winners include Ryder Cup star David Howell when he was an amateur in Wiltshire. My partner was Henry Pallas from Hamptworth Golf Club, and after a morning round of 73 we found ourselves in a tie for the lead with the PM round to go. After starting the second round with a double we were able to re-focus and shoot one under for our last 17 holes for a round of 70 which was enough to win the event by a clear margin. This is one of my biggest wins to date because the county foursomes is one of Wiltshires major championships and me and my partner are the youngest ever winners in the events history since David Howell and Gary Harris. If you copy the link below it will take you to the WCGU website where you can read more about the day and see a picture of me and my partner Henry Pallas with County President Geoff http://www.wcgu.org.uk/news/latest_news/foursomes_championship_draw

2012 Drive In

2012 is a very important year for me, not only is it my final year as a junior golfer before I join the adult ranks - but I also have the honour of being named as Boys Captain for my County (Wiltshire) as well as the Junior Captain for my home club Wrag Barn. The year has started well, I drove in as Junior Captain of Wrag Barn on the 26th February and if you go to youtube and search Matt Mumford - Wrag Barn #driverlove you can watch my first shot as Captain.

2012 Club Competition - so far

After winning the Captains Drive In in February I was asked to name a team of juniors to take part in the Simon Beadle Memorial Day. This is a special day that is held in honour of a former junior of the club and consists of teams of 10 players from current juniors, former juniors, the armed forces and friends of Simon. It was a great day as always and I am pleased to write that the juniors won 1st place in the comp. I also won best junior score for the day 36pts as well as the long drive prize. Next comp for me was an invite to play in Wrag Barns Seve Ballesteros Charity Challenge Golf Day. The format was teams of 2 playing off full handicap better ball, I played with a good friend of mine Beth Loveridge. We played some great golf my round consisted of seven birdies which helped us to a one stroke victory in the competition.

2012 Review

With the main season coming to an end in October and before all the winter golf starts up, thought I would keep everyone up to date on my season so far. My season as Junior Captain of Wrag Barn has been the best ever and something I will remember forever. Last week we won the Junior County League for only the second time since the league has been going (1986) previous victory was 2005. We now go onto the South West finals to try and win a place in the UK Final. It's been a really successful year, and I have done well in many competitions 1st Place - Captains Drive in (Wrag Barn) 1st Place - Simon Beadle Memorial Trophy (Wrag Barn) 1st Place - Seve Trophy (Wrag Barn) 1st Place - Pairs Day (Woodbridge Park) 1st Place Wiltshire Team Shield individual Gross (Ogbourne Downs) 2nd Place Junior Championships (Wrag Barn) As well as my County Foursomes victory mentioned earlier in my blogs. Still have a few weeks left yet and a few more comps to go so will write again soon Matt Mumford.

Debut in my first Professional event

On the 10th October 2012 I was invited to take part in the launch event of a brand new professional tour - The Players Tour. This was held at the London Club Kent, over the International Golf Course off the blue tees which measure over 7,000 yards. I would still be playing as an amateur so could not claim any prize fund or OOM points, but what I would get is the fantastic experience of playing along side professional golfers. It is a fantastic golf course, if you get the chance to play it you must, very long though off the blue tees and the pins were set to the same as when they hold European Tour qualifying, also with little run on the fairways the course was playing as hard as it could get. I was very nervous at the start and through 9 holes was 6 over par. I made good pars on 10 & 11 and then after two consecutive birdies got myself back to only 4 over for the comp. I carried on with pars all the way up to the 17th where I was really disappointed to make a double bogey, followed by a bogey on 18 to finish at +7. It was a day of ifs and butts - if I could have not made the two doubles bogeys I would have only been +3 for the day and in for a tie of 5th place. Not to be, I had to sign for my 7 over, I cant wait for next event though If you follow this link and go to picture 19 you will see me on the right (white hat) wearing my Parallel Clothing http://www.theplayerstour.org.uk/gallery/2012-londonclub/
